The Department of Foreign Languages,
Shanghai Institute of Technology
The Department of Foreign Languages undertakes the teaching activities for all
undergraduate students, including those in English Major program, junior college as well as
vocational college. Thanks to the substantial aid from the Institute level, the Department
has been making unswerving efforts in its staff development in various ways—recruiting
talented personnel like professors or associate professors and encouraging our full-time
teachers to pursue the graduate program of Master’s Degree and/or Doctorate Degree. All
these efforts have already brought about significant changes both in terms of the general
structure of teachers and in terms of their academic proficiency and teaching capability,
thus laying groundwork for the rapid development of the discipline of foreign languages in
SIT in the days to come.
At present, the registered teachers and staff members working in the Department of Foreign
Languages number 80, among whom 73 are teachers with 3 holding the academic title of full
professors, 10 associate professors and 48 lecturers. In addition, among all these
teachers, there is 1 young teacher who has already been awarded doctorate degree, 4
teachers who are now doctorate candidates and 54 teachers who have acquired the degree of
Master of Arts. Thus, those with doctorate and master’s degrees account for 75.3 percent
among all the teachers in the Department. What is to be specially mentioned is that
altogether 32 teachers have had the experiences of visiting or studying in tertiary schools
in such English-speaking countries as the United States of America, United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland, Australia, among others. Besides, 3 teachers have been
invited by a tertiary school in Shanghai to join the graduate program as supervisors.
The Department of Foreign Languages offers undergraduate programs for both English and
German. The former has already had three batches of graduate students whereas the latter
enrolled the first group of students in September 2008. At present, the total number of
registered students reaches 345 with one student from Japan. Currently, the English Major
Program provides two orientations for expertise development, namely “International Trade”
and “International Convention and Its Management”. By closely following the general
requirements— “having a good command of foreign languages, attaching much importance to
humanity and acquiring general knowledge of professional orientations”, the teachers in
the Department of Foreign Languages have been making determined efforts to develop their
students who have laid a solid foundation of English knowledge and skills, acquired an
extensive and profound understanding of cultural knowledge, and displayed the desired
ability to communicate both fluently and appropriately and become familiar with what is
required in the orientations. Our ultimate aim of education for both English and German
Major Programs can be described as training some advanced application-oriented personnel
who are fully able to cast their eyes over the horizons and who will become better
established in ‘international trade, the management in international conventions,
exhibitions and events, foreign affairs, education at both secondary and tertiary levels
and in other fields where the good command of English will have a role to play. The
unremitting efforts made by teachers and staff members of the Department of Foreign
Languages have already been rewarded by excellent performances of the students in the past
years. Two students from English Major Program have won the “Grand Prize”, “Gold Prize”
respectively in “China-Australia Friendship English Contest (East China)” for two
straight years, “First Prize” for English major contestants in NECCS has been granted to
three person times for the past two consecutive years. Besides, students from the
Department of Foreign Languages have also won the honor for SIT with their excellent
service and admirable contribution to the Special Olympic Games held in Shanghai. CCTV, STV
and OTV have reported the work by students from our Department during Special Olympic Games
and exhibitions in Shanghai.
The recent years have also witnessed the active and thorough implementation of reform in
teaching and performing projects in scientific research with approximately 100 papers
published in core journals both at home and abroad, thus making significant headway in this
regard. Starting from the year of 2008, the Department of Foreign Languages has been
entitled to the construction of “Key Discipline” at SIT, which greatly facilitates even
more rapid progress in its development. Besides, as one of the key participants in Pilot
Program for Excellent Undergraduate Program by Shanghai Municipal Educational Commission,
the Department of Foreign Languages has achieved a lot—carrying out joint research with
professors from Business College, Politecnico di Milano, co-publishing “The Report on
Development of China’s Convention & Exhibition Economy (2006-2007)” , and “The Report on
Development of China’s Convention & Exhibition Economy (2007-2008)”, both of which are “
Blue Book of Convention & Exhibition Economy” by ‘Social Sciences Academic Press (China)
’and also publishing articles in overseas journals.
